Pruned Apple Trees
I have not taken any more pictures yet but I will be doing shortly. I have been waiting to see if the final few apple trees respond to my severe pruning or if they give up the will to live and die in a huff. But the final two trees seem to be starting to bud from old bud scars. The last two to respond are a Bramley and my only Discovery. Since the Discovery is a reasonably early apple I have been a little worried that it had given up the ghost. But the good news is that small red buds are now visible in some of the old bud scars I think it is going to give living a try. The Bramley is one of two I have planted, both were planted on the same day and both were extremely healthy looking trees. They are planted about ten meters apart with another row of trees between them and so far as I can see the soil they are in is very similar. But one tree is about a week or more ahead of the other and it has only been in the last few days that small new buds have become visible. So far so good the apples just might survive my savage pruning, I will put up some photos of the pruned trees and the new buds within the next week. The leggy pot grown plum trees are next for the treatment, the poor unsuspecting things are flowering at the moment and have no idea of what's coming in the next couple of months. I do feel guilty about what I have to do but I will do it, I'm sure they will be better trees for the experience eventually. The one year old maiden trees are another matter, since they are really only single stems with no or very few branches they should be much easier to train to bush shape as they aren't suffering from a year or more of being left to their own devices. Pictures to follow.
